Canada Remembers the 69th Anniversary of the Dieppe Raid

ID: 1032046

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 08/19/11 -- The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, issued the following statement to mark the 69th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid:

"Canadians have always shown extraordinary courage and dedication. Let us not forget the men and women who have risked and sacrificed their lives for peace, freedom, and democracy.

The Dieppe Raid is a clear example of Canadians' willingness to fight tyranny. On August 19, 1942, nearly 5,000 members of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division landed as part of Operation Jubilee, a raid on the enemy-held port of Dieppe, France. During what became one of the bloodiest battles of the Second World War, Canada suffered more than 3,300 casualties, including 913 Canadians who paid the ultimate price. Another 1,946 Canadians would endure harsh treatment as prisoners of war.

Despite heavy losses, the Allied troops' efforts were not in vain. The Dieppe Raid provided important information for planning the D-Day landings in 1944. It let the French know we had not forgotten them, and it gave them hope for the day their oppressors would be driven out of their land.

Not every battle ends in victory. Yet every battle in which Canada takes part reflects the unbreakable spirit of our men and women in uniform. Canada remembers its heroes-we pay tribute to their legacy and honour those who continue to serve. We enjoy our freedom today thanks to these brave Canadians.

Today, please join me in honouring their achievements and sacrifices, and remembering their extraordinary courage. Lest we forget."
