EADS North America's Voice Encryption Device Completes Joint Interoperability Demonstration
ECTOCRYP(R) BLACK Device Enabled Interoperability Between Different Security and Operational Domains at Event Directed by Joint Chiefs of Staff
(firmenpresse) - ARLINGTON, VA -- (Marketwire) -- 08/18/11 -- EADS North America's voice encryption device has successfully demonstrated its capabilities in the annual, DISA-sponsored Coalition Warrior Interoperability Demonstration (CWID) event. As part of the interoperability exercise, ECTOCRYP® BLACK allowed users on a combination of secret and unclassified phone networks around the country to talk to each other seamlessly through one purpose-built gateway, enabling secure teleconferencing and point-to-point communication.

During the CWID event, which consisted of a simulated coalition exercise set against a real-world backdrop, the ECTOCRYP® BLACK gateway device was physically based at U.S. Joint Forces Command (JFCOM) in Suffolk, Va. Role players were located at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, Mass., U.S. Northern Command in Colorado Springs, Colo., Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command in San Diego, Calif., and a remote deployment at JFCOM itself. The exercise linked role players representing Air Component Commander headquarters, Homeland Security and Defense, Maritime Component Commander headquarters, and a Marine Expeditionary Unit.
"The CWID demonstration marks the first time it has been possible to link both security and operational domains with voice communication through a single compact device in a realistic operational scenario," said Thomas Darcy, vice president of Defense Electronics and Systems at EADS North America. "This trial also successfully demonstrated ECTOCRYP® Black's interoperability with key elements of our military's existing and future network architectures, including the General Dynamics Sectéra® vIPer™ and Cisco V 150.1 and Media gateway devices."
During the exercise, remote users on the CWID unclassified network initiated secure voice communications to the command headquarters at JFCOM using loaned by General Dynamics C4 Systems. The Secure Communications Interoperability Protocol, or SCIP, phones exchanged key information with the ECTOCRYP® BLACK secure voice gateway at JFCOM in order to establish a secure call. As a further dimension of interoperability, ECTOCRYP® BLACK was integrated with V.150.1 and Media gateway devices provided by . These devices provided the necessary Time Division Multiplexing-to-IP translation to enable encrypted calls to be received on the IP-based CWID secret network.
"In a real-world situation, there could be 92 remote users simultaneously communicating via a single ECTOCRYP® BLACK device, using up to 92 different encryption keys," said Oliver. "We now have the potential of allowing these multiple deployed forces on unclassified networks to participate in the secure voice communications of Command headquarters."
With four T1 interfaces providing a capacity of 92 simultaneous individual calls, ECTOCRYP® BLACK provides interoperability between SCIP telephones and secure speech networks to a greater degree than any existing system of its size. Users can assign separate key material for each of the 92 channels to accommodate communication from multiple sources at multiple security levels. The system also is scalable, offering the ability to expand the call capacity by 92 users with each additional unit.
Developed by EADS division Cassidian as part of a line of programmable cryptographic devices, ECTOCRYP® BLACK uses a common commercial off-the-shelf hardware architecture that can be programmed to accommodate new features and technology standards. This allows it to meet the evolving needs of communications and information networks.
The Coalition Warrior Interoperability Demonstration (CWID) is a Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff-directed annual event that engages cutting-edge information technology, focusing on operational shortfalls identified by combatant commanders and government agencies. Technologies are approved for participation because they address a new information sharing capability or might improve an existing capability. The demonstrations -- which take place in various locations worldwide -- focus on technology discovery, risk reduction, and interoperability. Technologies are assessed using real-world inspired warfighter, Homeland Security/Homeland Defense and emergency responder scenarios. During demonstrations, technologies may receive three types of assessments which include User Utility, Interoperability and Information Assurance. Assessment results are captured in CWID's annual final report which informs defense, federal, state and local acquisition decision-makers. The final report publishes by October/November.
