Chartwells-Thompson Hospitality Supports Chicago's Bud Billiken Parade
(firmenpresse) - CHICAGO, IL -- (Marketwire) -- 08/16/11 -- Chartwells-Thompson Hospitality, the major school meals provider for Chicago Public Schools (CPS), donated 850 lunches for student participants in the Bud Billiken Parade, which took place on August 13th. Chartwells-Thompson has donated thousands of free lunches in the past for students participating in the Bud Billiken parade and picnic.
In addition to the donated meals, Chartwells-Thompson donated a float to CPS Nutrition Support Services. The theme of the float this year was "Go for the Gold" to celebrate 19 CPS schools receiving awards for meeting the USDA's requirements of HealthierUS School Challenge. The HealthierUS School Challenge is a program supported by the First Lady to promote student wellness and eliminate childhood obesity within a generation.
The Bud Billiken Parade and Picnic is the oldest and largest African American parade in the United States. Since 1929, it has always been held on the second Saturday in August in Chicago and is the second largest annual parade in the United States.
"With the focus of the parade is on the betterment of Chicago youth, it makes sense for us to be part of this exciting Chicago tradition," said Bob Bloomer, regional vice president for Chartwells-Thompson. "Once again this year the Chartwells-Thompson team joined CPS Nutrition Support Service staff, Healthy Schools Campaign volunteers, CPS parents, students and principals to march in the parade along with our Go for the Gold float. We're thrilled that there were more than 100 students and adults marching with us."
