St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Blood Bank Signs Agreement With Daxor's Subsidiary, Idant Labs, to Accept Patients' Frozen Blood

ID: 1029233

(firmenpresse) - NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 08/10/11 -- Daxor Corporation (NYSE Amex: DXR), a medical instrumentation and biotechnology company, announced that Dr. Mark Friedman, Director of St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center's Blood Bank, signed a letter of agreement with Idant Laboratories, a subsidiary of DAXOR Corporation, to accept patients' autologous frozen red blood cells and plasma stored at its facility in the Empire State Building.

Mr. Stephen Fybish, a recent transfusion recipient of his own freshly thawed red blood cells during cardiac bypass surgery at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, had stored his blood in late November of 2010, never anticipating he would actually require it so soon.

"Before my operation I was aware of the risk of under-transfusion, and the result of cognitive problems that could occur by not replacing the blood loss from my surgery with a transfusion. So I was very happy the surgical team at St. Luke's-Roosevelt had access to my own freshly thawed frozen blood I had stored. It allowed me to emerge from the operation with my excellent memory and other mental faculties completely intact and unimpaired."

Dr. Ariel Distenfeld, Associate Blood Bank Director at DAXOR, added, "Because of the perception of potential risk of transmission of infectious diseases, the public blood supply is under close scrutiny by the medical community with some reluctance to transfuse patients. What's more," Dr. Distenfeld said, "refrigerated RBCs can be stored for up to 42 days and will lose some of its effectiveness and oxygen carrying capacity after 14 days. Red blood cells frozen at minus 120° F after donation retain critical enzymes and have greater oxygen carrying capacity."

St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center joins NYU Medical Center, Hospital for Special Surgery, Hospital for Joint Diseases, Brookdale University Hospital & Medical Center, Stony Brook University Hospital and Mercy Hospital Center to offer patients DAXOR's safer and more advanced frozen autologous transfusion medicine procedure.

Dr. Robert Rosenthal, a pioneer in blood banking and the discoverer of Factor 11 clotting protein (Rosenthal Factor), is Senior Blood Bank Director of DAXOR. For information, contact Robert Marcus, Blood Bank Coordinator at DAXOR, Suite 7120, 350 5th Avenue, NY, NY 10118 or call 212-330-8511.
