Jan Reiff: Image film „World of Wagner“ nominated for the 2012 German Design Award
The German Design Award is bestowed by the German Design Council, the most reputable German design institution. It is not possible to apply for this prize. One can only be nominated, such as quite recently the image film “World of Wagner”. It has been produced by the film maker Jan Reiff with his Bar Vinya Film for the German company Wagner System in Lahr, Black Forest. (firmenpresse) - „World of Wagner“ is an emotional filmlet with a lot of special effects: smiling fish, seemly self-building shelves, plants move like leaded by a ghost hand, just to name a few. It has already been awarded with the international business film award “Victoria in Silver”, and now it goes for the German Design Award. Lutz Dietzold from the German Design Council congratulated for the nomination as follows: “[…] Two disciplines, one competition, which differentiates not between communication and product design, but between class and world class. Participating in the 2012 German Design Award means that the entrants are playing in the Champions League. With people who are shaping the future.” Jan Reiff is well-known for that. With his “Bar Vinya Film” he produces stunning films in Hollywood class, video-clips and advertising spots, which surprises, convinces, shocks and amuses the spectators. We ask for his formula for success.
“Mr Reiff, within the branch you are considered as a visionary and a perfectionist who appreciates quality, professionalism and ultimate perfection. How do you communicate this high level to your customers?”
“It is like selling a car. I ask the customer: do you want a VW Polo or a fully developed Porsche? Or do you prefer the middle-class car? A film is like all other products: there is no limit upwards, but downwards, if you want a high-quality motion picture. As soon as compromises are wanted for the producing of a commercial spot or an image film, we need to think about the concept or we do not make the film. A bad image film is what it means verbatim: bad image. Image films and commercials are a company’s calling card, a philosophy.”
“How do you proceed a film project?”
“There is no formula. I have a pool which is going through my head, sometimes there is something appropriate, sometimes not. Often there are daily grind situations or passages from songs which inspire.”
“Your customers use intensified the internet as a communication platform. Which current works are online at present?”
“The Wagner films, thus the image film “World of Wagner” and the spots “Scratch” and “Dezibel”. My current Fressnapf spots are broadcasted on TV (Fressnapf is a big German pet shop chain). A cinema movie, IRON DOORS 3D, is currently available on Blu Ray DVD in 3D, another cinema project with international staff is presently in the final phase.”
“Which significant value do have distinctions such as the nomination for the German Design Award for you?”
“This is a demanding jury of a very considerable award. Thus it has a high value. The nomination proves: not anything good must also be extensive. This theme is discussed highly within the branch at present. Effort and quality are not necessarily affiliated with each other. The most valuable in the future will be the pencil and a note pad to sketch the (good) ideas. There are numerous 100-million-dollars-Hollywood-productions which are soulless and boring.”
