Time to Set the Record Straight - Professional Institute Launches Campaign to Debunk CFIB Myths About Canada's Public Service

ID: 1028548

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 08/08/11 -- Public service professionals, fed up with Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) President Catherine Swift's constant portrayal of them as overpaid individuals whose only interest is to retire at taxpayers' expense, are launching an awareness campaign to counter this inaccurate, biased and self-interested view of Canada's public service. "Prosperity: It's Mutually Beneficial/Public Sector Employees in Support of Independent Business" is aimed at reminding Canadians, particularly the country's small business owners, of the critical role that public servants play in the protection of the health and safety of Canadians, and how indispensable they are to the small business sector.

"Anybody can stand on a soapbox and point fingers at so-called "government fat cats" said David Gray, Vice-President of the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada. "At a time when millions of Canadians are faced with such critical issues as meager employer pensions, the loss of a pension when a company goes bankrupt, or no pension at all, Ms. Swift does nothing but spread disinformation about pension plans and blame the federal deficit on government employees. Yet she certainly has no issue with billions of dollars in tax cuts for our nation's richest corporations and individuals".

Grassroots CFIB members are well aware that hundreds of thousands of public sector employees are good customers, good neighbours, families and friends who have always supported their businesses. These business owners should ask themselves if Catherine Swift and the CFIB really have their best interest at heart.

"I invite all Canadians to visit to learn about how public service professionals are looking after the Public Good and our collective interest, including those of Canada's small business community. They will see how their work contrasts with the CFIB's efforts to promote a race to the bottom in the name of tax cuts and almighty profit", he concluded.

The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada is a national union representing some 60,000 professionals and scientists across Canada's public sector.
