"Unprecedented" BRAC Property Turnover at Fort Monroe
The Fort Monroe Authority Has Taken Over the Management Responsibility of Nearly 200 Residential Properties, Along With a Limited Number of Commercial and Recreational Buildings, Ahead of the US Army's Departure on September 15
(firmenpresse) - HAMPTON, VA -- (Marketwire) -- 08/03/11 -- The Fort Monroe Authority (FMA) today announced that it has signed a lease agreement with the US Army that will complete the turnover of nearly 200 Army family housing units, as well as several commercial and recreational buildings, to the FMA effective August 1st. This milestone agreement, accomplished six weeks ahead of the Army's departure from Fort Monroe on September 15, 2011, represents a key component of the FMA's plan to provide a smooth transition for Fort Monroe from Army ownership and management to public use.
According to a spokesman with the US Army, this transfer is unprecedented among BRAC closures, both for the volume of property leased and because it occurred seamlessly, reducing the number of buildings scheduled to be mothballed by the US Army beginning September 15th.
To date, the successful transfer of residential units from the US Army to the FMA has allowed many military families the opportunity to stay in their homes and make the commute to Fort Eustis and other military installations in the Hampton Roads area without relocating.
The Fort Monroe Authority is working with Old Point Comfort Real Estate Services (OPCRES) for property management. Additional leasing information can be obtain by calling 757 723-4238 or email Kim Gross, Property Manager at .
Fort Monroe is the largest fortress ever built in America. Situated on a barrier spit known for generations as Old Point Comfort, the more than 500-acre property looks out at the southern end of the Chesapeake Bay where the Elizabeth, Nansemond and James Rivers empty into the Bay. In 2005 the Department of Defense's Base Relocation and Closure (BRAC) commission recommended that Fort Monroe be closed after nearly 200 years of active service. Under the BRAC recommendation, as of September 15, 2011, the Army will leave Fort Monroe permanently. Following the Army's departure, ownership and responsibility for the Fort and surrounding property will revert to the Commonwealth of Virginia.
