Leaders in Low-Power Embedded Wi-Fi and SEP 2.0 Software Partner to Advance Smart Grid Market

(firmenpresse) - SAN JOSE, CA and SAN DIEGO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 08/03/11 -- In a breakthrough for the Smart Grid market, ® Corporation, a leading developer of ultra-low power embedded Wi-Fi solutions, and , Inc., developer of Smart Energy Profile 2.0 (SEP 2.0) Software, have partnered to present a joint demonstration of SEP 2.0 on a Wi-Fi based Smart Plug using the SEP 2.0 compliant G2H-SE2 Software from Grid2Home and a smart plug based on the GS1011M Wi-Fi module from GainSpan. The demonstration took place as part of a multi-vendor demo at the Wi-Fi Smart Energy Forum, underway this week at the Hyatt Regency Chicago O'Hare and hosted by the Wi-Fi Alliance®.

The successful demonstration showed a Wi-Fi based device responding -- by turning lights on and off for example -- to SEP 2.0 Demand Response/Load Control events retrieved from an Energy Service Interface (ESI). SEP 2.0 is one of the key standards approved by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for the smart grid, and is widely supported as the smart energy application-level standard within the home.

"This event is important in showing that SEP 2.0 is no longer specific to ZigBee or 802.15.4 Phy and Mac. Utilities and appliance manufacturers should now consider Wi-Fi as their first technology choice for smart energy devices inside the home," said Bernard Aboussouan, vice president of marketing at GainSpan. "Wi-Fi's widespread adoption in homes and businesses makes it a de facto solution for smart energy applications. The proliferation of Wi-Fi in laptops and smart phones and the consumer familiarity with Wi-Fi technology will be a major enabler to the adoption of Wi-Fi based smart energy devices."

Aboussouan noted that the G2H-SE2 Software is memory footprint optimized and was able to run on GainSpan's GS1011 ultra-low power Wi-Fi system-on-chip (SoC).

"The implementation of SEP 2.0 over Wi-Fi in devices is beneficial to the entire ecosystem," said Mike Bourton, VP of Business Development at Grid2Home. "It gives utilities and other service providers the flexibility to use customers' existing Wi-Fi networks to control and monitor smart energy devices and appliances. Grid2Home is pleased to be partnering with GainSpan to demonstrate the G2H-SE2 Software in combination with the GS1011M Wi-Fi module addressing smart energy applications."

"We congratulate GainSpan and Grid2Home on their participation in the Wi-Fi Smart Energy Forum SEP 2 Demonstration event," said Wi-Fi Alliance technical director Greg Ennis. "As Wi-Fi continues its momentum in smart energy applications, this demonstration, including GainSpan's GS1011 Wi-Fi module and Grid2Home's G2H-SE2 software, is a testament to the industry's readiness for commercial deployment and the technology's suitability for a wide range of smart energy implementations."

The Wi-Fi Smart Energy Forum included the first large-scale interoperable demonstration of Wi-Fi SEP 2 implementations and was the first step in joint marketing efforts by GainSpan and Grid2Home. Under the partnership, the two companies will work together to enable SEP 2.0 over Wi-Fi and drive the market forward.

GainSpan will be offering SEP 2.0 as an optional part of the software stack running on its chip and modules. The Serial to Wi-Fi version of the stack also includes rich networking features, HTTP(S)/ DHCP/ DNS client and server, WPS and web page provisioning and all Wi-Fi security. Appliance and smart energy device manufacturers should contact GainSpan for more details on the availability of SEP 2.0.
