ID: 1026803

(firmenpresse) - WINNIPEG, MANITOBA -- (Marketwire) -- 08/02/11 -- The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada's Minister of Labour, was joined today by Candice Hoeppner, Member of Parliament for Portage-Lisgar, as she met with key stakeholders at a roundtable discussion on women in the workforce.

"The purpose of these consultations is to have an open dialogue in which all participants can share their views with respect to the challenges women face in today's evolving workplaces," said Minister Raitt. "Healthy work environments contribute to the country's prosperity and the well-being of workers and their families. Together we can work towards achieving a model for fair, respectful and healthy workplaces for women that will lead to a strong and prosperous Canada."

The roundtable was an opportunity for the Minister to exchange views with and seek input from participants on a number of issues faced by women in the workplace. Discussion topics included employment equity, workplace violence, harassment, discrimination and recruitment and retention. The Minister will also host a similar roundtable later this week in Vancouver as part of a cross-country tour.

The visits highlight the Government of Canada's commitment to improving fairness for women in the workforce as part of its ongoing efforts to create productive work environments and a stronger economy.

The Labour Program develops, administers and enforces workplace legislation and regulations, including the Employment Equity Act and the Canada Labour Code, which covers industrial relations, health and safety and employment standards. These laws apply to federally regulated workers and employers.
