The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, today attended the International Pow-Wow of Wendake to present the Aboriginal Veterans Millennium Medal to Colonel Jocelyn Paul, CD, a member of the Huron-Wendat community of Wendake.
"It was an honour to be here tonight to present Colonel Paul with such a prestigious award," said Minister Blaney. "Our Government is proud to recognize the sacrifices and achievements of our Aboriginal Veterans who have served this great country with courage and distinction. Their service is a source of pride and inspiration for their families, their communities and all Canadians."
Colonel Jocelyn Paul, CD, commanded the 2nd Battalion, Royal 22e Regiment Battle Group (TF 1-09) in Kandaharprovince in Afghanistanbetween April and October 2009. Col. Paul was assigned to his current post as the Commander for the Counter-Improvised Explosive Device Task Force in June 2010.
The Aboriginal Veterans Millennium Medal was created jointly by the National Aboriginal Veterans Association and Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada to recognize men and women who have risked their lives defending Canadian values of peace, freedom and democracy. It is awarded to Aboriginal members and Veterans of the Canadian Forces, the Merchant Navy, and peacekeeping forces, as well as to Aboriginal Canadians who may have served with the American Armed Forces before or during the year 2000.
The International Pow-Wow of Wendake is the first of several events in which Minister Blaney will participate during his current tour of Quebec. Over the coming days, Minister Blaney will also travel to other parts of the province to meet with Veterans in their own communities. He will use this time to continue listening to the priorities and concerns of the remarkable men and women who have served our country, as well as departmental staff and partners who make a difference in their lives.
