Berlin Heart Centers 2011: Number of worldwide clinics implanting Berlin Heart ventricular assist devices further increases.
Berlin, 29 July 2011: The increasing number of heart centers working with Berlin Heart ventricular assist devices is an indicator for the Berlin-based company that these devices are urgently needed by patients suffering from heart failure.
(firmenpresse) - Not only German clinics, as for example the University Hospital Aachen, but also international hospitals such as the University Hospital Nantes, France, the Instituto Nacional de Cardiologia in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the Silesian Heart Center in Zabrze, Poland have already chosen this method, by the end of the second quarter 2011. For these hospitals and their patients the implantation of so-called artificial hearts or ventricular assist devices, in most cases, is a life-saving alternative and bridges the gap until a matching donor heart can be found. Not only in Germany does the waiting period for heart transplantation become longer, donor hearts are barely available. In Germany only about 400 heart transplantations were possible during recent years. According to the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, less than half of the required number of organs. For heart-failure patients, whose hearts are unable to function properly, it means that the waiting time needs to be bridged: without the mechanical support of artificial hearts - like the INCOR® or the EXCOR® system - impossible. Now there are more clinics able to offer their patients a therapy option with Berlin Heart products. The patient in Rio de Janeiro and the other at the University Clinic in Nantes have already been really lucky: they received a transplant after having been supported for several weeks by the EXCOR® Pediatric device.
