20 years of German innovation in skin cancer diagnostics
FotoFinder celebrates company anniversary
(PresseBox) - The history of skin cancer detection would be another one without Foto-Finder. 20 years ago, the founders Rudolf and Andreas Mayer started de-veloping technology for mole mapping and skin imaging. Today, several thousand doctors worldwide work with FotoFinder systems to detect skin cancer at an early stage. A variety of analysis functions, an intuitive soft-ware and regular innovations mark the cornerstones of the company suc-cess.
The success story started in 1991 with an image database. The current soft-ware, which helps doctors monitoring moles, is the result of recent develop-ments. Special cameras, lenses, tripods and expert systems complete the range for comprehensive melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer detection.
Milestones in digital dermoscopy have been invented by FotoFinder: A medical camera which takes overview and microscopic pictures of moles became a standard. Doctors get an instant second opinion with the help of an expert sys-tem which analyzes moles according to pattern recognition algorithms to im-prove diagnostic accuracy.
Since 2006, the implementation of Total Body Mapping has been helping high-risk patients with multiple moles: Consistent full body photography with FotoFinder can be performed in less than ten minutes. It is combined with an expert system for automatic detection of new or changed moles. The fast and accurate procedure is a safe way of skin cancer prevention and minimizes the risk of overseeing skin changes.
Dermoscopy in Full HD marked another breakthrough: Since 2009, mole pic-tures can be evaluated on-screen in maximum video resolution. Even smallest details and changes of the mole structure are visible with this technology.
Last year, FotoFinder created the field of mobile digital dermoscopy by invent-ing the handyscope, a dermoscopy device for the iPhone. The combination of skin microscopy with latest communication technology gives more doctors the chance to detect skin cancer at an early stage. With this device, also doctors in rural areas or at home visits can conduct an initial skin cancer check with mi-croscopic mole pictures.
In 2002 FotoFinder expanded to Italy with an own subsidiary and started sales in Southern Europe. Doctors in the United States examine with FotoFinder since 2006 when FotoFinder Systems Inc. was founded in Maryland. With part-ners on every continent, ISO-certified FotoFinder technology is available world-wide.
"FotoFinder" - the name of the first database became a synonym for dermato-logic imaging systems and finally company name. Systems for early skin can-cer detection for practices and clinics are the main field of activity. Besides, devices for photo documentation, simulation of aesthetic treatments and clinical trials complete the product range.
The German company was founded in 1991 and is a worldwide leading manufac-turer of medical imaging systems. Focus is the development of devices for skin cancer diagnosis, aesthetic medicine, and clinical trials. Thanks to subsidiaries in the USA, Italy, Spain, and a global network of distributors, FotoFinder has a worldwide presence. The company employs more than 40 people. The produc-tion is located in Germany.
