BIS Industrietechnik Salzburg awarded contract worth EUR 30 million for a biotechnology plant
Munich, 25 May 2011. BIS Industrietechnik Salzburg, a subsidiary of the Bilfinger Berger Industrial Services Group (BIS Group), has been awarded a contract by US biotech company Genzyme for the mechanical installation of a production facility to produce the active agent in a treatment for Pompe Disease. The contract has a total volume of EUR 30 million.
(firmenpresse) - The heart of the plant, which is to be built in Geel in Belgium, is formed by two production lines each comprising a 4,000 litre bioreactor for producing the therapeutic protein Myozyme. The plant is to be completed by the end of September 2012. The general architect for the plant is the PM Group, Ireland. BIS Industrietechnik Salzburg previously worked with this company on another large project in Paris last year.

Ludwig Paradeiser, General Manager of BIS Industrietechnik Salzburg, sees the contract as a crucial step in ongoing efforts to internationalise the company’s business activities: “Genzyme is one of the world’s leading biotechnology companies. We are very pleased that we were able to prevail over renowned peers. The project in Belgium will allow us to additionally extend our international activities.”
Pompe’s disease is named after the Dutch doctor and pathologist J.C. Pompe, who first described the disease in 1932. This hereditary condition may occur in infants, children or adults. Patients suffer from the absence of activity of a specific enzyme, which causes various ailments. It is accompanied by advancing muscular dystrophy and respiratory difficulties. Using an enzyme replacement therapy with Myozyme, it is now possible to treat the disease.
