Innovative materials from ContiTech offer protection and up comfort

(PresseBox) - Whether it's a matter of concertina wall material or coated fabrics for protective suits, technical textiles are extremely versatile. ContiTech AG will be demonstrating this at TechTextil, the world's largest trade show for technical textiles and nonwovens, held in Frankfurt/Main from May 24 to 26, 2011. Among the range of products ContiTech Elastomer Coatings will have on display for trade show visitors at booth B 42 in hall 3.0, its advanced and patented silicon concertina wall material occupies a place of honor.
Used to form a flexible connection in buses, rail vehicles and jetways, this coated fabric boasts the kind of high resistance to fire - especially as regards smoke gas density and toxicity - called for in the European Fire Safety Standard CEN/TS 45545 and elsewhere. The material additionally meets all other high demands for articulated vehicle wall material. It is resistant to environmental influences like UV radiation, water, salt, gasoline and oil as well as flying gravel. Absolutely crackproof, flexible and weatherproof from -40 °C to 120 °C, it is capable of withstanding extreme mechanical loads.
Optimum crack resistance for personal protection
Also on display is the new material for protective gear. Thanks to the ContiBarrierSystem® the material now affords a wider margin of safety. And it is lighter and more comfortable. When used in chemical protection suits, the advanced material design offers much improved protection from chemicals and gases. The barrier layer effectively stops hazardous substances such as chlorine, chlorinated hydrocarbons and ammonia. High resistance to acids, lye and aggressive chemicals, together with excellent tear resistance, ensures maximum protection for the wearer. "Absolute reliability like this gives it a major edge over conventional materials as well as over the disposable suits in general use," notes André Overkamp, ContiTech product manager. "Our personal protection suits provide many years of use."

The new design and optimized modern material render the material roughly 30 percent lighter and thus considerably more flexible and thinner than previous materials. This not only makes processing easier and piecing more economical. The gear made from it also wears more comfortably so that action forces feel much less constrained in it and do not tire as quickly. These are arguments that leading manufacturers of protective suits worldwide have already taken to heart.
