Swedish clinics achieve excellent outcome with EXCOR® assist device program
The Sahlgrenska University Hospital has just implanted the 2.000th EXCOR® device.
(firmenpresse) - It is only three years ago, when the Sahlgrenska University Hospital and the Queen Silvia Children Hospital in Sweden started to implant the EXCOR® ventricular assist device (VAD) to patients suffering from severe heart failure. In the event of the own heart no longer being able to provide the vital pump function of pumping blood through the body, the device offers a life-saving therapy for patients of every age and body size. The results the two hospitals are already achieving by using the assist device, are excellent. With a current 92% survival rate, the EXCOR® system bridges the time until a matching donor heart becomes available for the patient. Although the waiting time for a heart transplant in Sweden is shorter than in other countries, the device is essential. The Sahlgrenska University Hospital has just implanted the 2.000th EXCOR® device. Prof. Dr. Ulf Kjellman, chief of the VAD program, implemented the operation and recalls most satisfied: „The patient’s condition was quite critical when he came here. Since he received the EXCOR® system he is recovering fast. We are optimistic he can be discharged home soon“. The well functioning VAD team around Prof. Dr. Kjellman in Gothenburg works extremely professional and confident with the system, which obviously is one of their success factors. Immediately after having established the VAD program, the Swedish team joined a product training from Berlin Heart, where system handling, patient management and pre-, intra- and post-operative issues were discussed. In order to intensify their knowledge and for the latest VAD information, they are coming to visit Berlin Heart in Germany in spring time.
