From PET bottle to design model: First RAMPF Tooling board material made from PET flakes to be presented at Euromold 2010
Grafenberg, 13.10.2010 – Ecology, Efficiency, Innovation – This is the promising trio that RAMPF Tooling GmbH & Co. KG will be presenting at this year‘s Euromold exhibition in Frankfurt. The material specialist will be showcasing the first working board for the foundry industry made from recycled PET flakes at its booth L128 in hall 8. This particularly robust material can withstand strong mechanical impact.
(firmenpresse) - Roughly 800 million bottles made from polyethylenterephtalat (PET) are in circulation in Germany per year. In times of scarce resources their recycling presents a significant raw material resource. The recycled PET bottles are used to create new PET bottles, lining for jackets, T-shirts or fleece jumpers. That they can be used to manufacture a board material for tooling is a novelty, which RAMPF Tooling will be showcasing at this year’s Euromold. With the light green working board RAKU-TOOL® WB-1250 the developers have succeeded in creating a sustainable product. A closer look at the chemistry shows us that the RAMPF experts have used an aromatic polyesterpolyol made from recycled PET instead of the normally used po-lyetherpolyol to manufacture polyurethane boards. This had some astonishing im-plications as through the substitution a higher abrasion and better flame resistance could be obtained. The light green board also exhibits a superior impact and edge strength. With these properties, the board material is specially suited for applications in the foundry industry, i.e. the production of pattern plates and core boxes. In addi-tion it can be used for hammer forms, metal forming and vacuum forming tools as well as tooling aids.
The third “eco” board material
“We do not see sustainability as a trend but as a basis for our success. This is why we continue to develop ecological and economical alternatives“, explains Yoshiaki Naganuma, head of R & D at RAMPF Tooling. With this new product development the modeling specialist has expanded its existing portfolio of “eco” board materials. The company is already offering the modeling board MB-0540 and the working board WB-1450. Both are manufactured using predominantly recycling polyol. The so-called “Recypols” as well as the “Polyesterpolyols” made from PET flakes are supplied by the sister company RAMPF Ecosystems, which has specialized in the recycling of polyurethane and PET waste. Through the use of thermal glykolysis the company turns these materials back into recycling polyols which in turn are used to produce polyurethane.
The new WB-1250 fits neatly into the existing RAKU-TOOL® product range of mod-eling and working boards. The products are easy to machine and to work on ma-nually. In combination with the corresponding adhesives or repair pastes they offer efficient solutions for modeling. RAMPF Tooling offers a complete package consist-ing of styling, modeling and working boards and corresponding epoxy and polyure-thane adhesives as well as polyester repair pastes.
Less work and less wastage
RAMPF Tooling will also be presenting its Close Contour product range including pastes and three dimensional Close Contour Castings at Euromold. The range stands for more efficiency and ecology.
The Close Contour Pastes are used in the automotive, marine, wind energy as well as aerospace industry. They are quick and easy to process. The polyurethane or epoxy pastes are applied to a machined supporting structure which is already a close shape to the final model. Some of the pastes can already be processed after a twelve hour room temperature cure.
With the Close Contour Casting process, where close contour models and molds are produced using a special casting process, the user can save time and money. The customer will get a three dimensional casting which is already close to the final shape. Ten products are available for various applications like modeling, metal forming, lay-up tools, seamless galvanobath models and also for the foundry indus-try. The whole process is completed in-house by RAMPF Tooling and the customer is supplied with the final Close Contour Casting. Through the close contour shape less machining work is required and less waste generated.
“For customers who need more scope for development we offer our recently intro-duced Close Contour Block – a customized, rectangular and unfinished block", ex-plains Peter Kimmerle, sales director at RAMPF Tooling, who is looking forward to a promising Euromold 2010.
International visitors from Japan and Turkey
1,500 exhibitors from 45 nations and 60,000 trade fair visitors are expected to attend Euromold 2010. The exhibition has found an important partner for modeling and tooling with its special guest country Turkey. RAMPF Tooling is also taking ad-vantage of the international platform by inviting various visitors from Japan and Tur-key as well as looking after its German partners and customers. For five years al-ready, RAMPF has been successfully operating its subsidiary based in Osaka, Ja-pan. Car manufacturers like Toyota R+D are amongst its customers there. In Tur-key, RAMPF has established a prosperous relationship with its partner Modelform based in Istanbul.
