KS Kolbenschmidt is awarded DAF contract for steel-piston Power Cylinder Unit
(PresseBox) - Nowhere in the auto sector are vehicle mileages higher than in the truck and transport segment. All-steel pistons can address the steep challenges of rising ignition pressures and engine temperatures and are therefore gaining ground worldwide. KS Kolbenschmidt GmbH has now received from DAF a follow-up contract for the series production of a Power Cylinder Unit (PCU) module. This complies with Euro 6 emission standards and consists of a (steel) piston, piston rings, pin, and cylinder liner. It will be installed in a six-cylinder in-line (12.9 liter) engine for heavy commercial vehicles on highway duty. Production start-up is scheduled for the end of 2012.
KS Kolbenschmidt has assumed full systems responsibility (first-tier) for this megaproject involving around 300,000 to 400,000 Power Cylinder Unit (PCU) modules to be delivered to DAF. Added to these are further components to be supplied by other Kolbenschmidt Pierburg Group divisions. "We have been awarded this Euro 6 contract because we are able to supply the customer with the newest steel piston design," comments Horst Binnig, CEO.
Up to the start of series production, extensive engine and vehicle tests are planned in order to comply with the challenging demands regarding component stress, wear, oil consumption and blow-by. First-tier piston systems such as this PCU module, for which a single manufacturer has complete responsibility, are increasingly in demand. True to the principle of "one face to the customer" they simplify the project process for the OEM.
Together with US and European vehicle and engine manufacturers, Kolbenschmidt Pierburg has in recent years and with great success developed friction-welded monobloc steel pistons for the commercial vehicle market. The first of these went into series production in 2005. "With these allsteel pistons we can ensure even greater mileages than with aluminum ones.
Particularly the monobloc variety with interior cooling, which thanks to the reduced surface temperature leads to reduced emissions, is very much in demand with the manufacturers," says Binnig.
Worldwide just under 20 different types of piston are in the development phase. Among their characteristics are low weight, good cooling, ruggedness and durability. Four projects involving series-production products for DAF and MAN have already been successfully completed. KS Kolbenschmidt was also recently awarded a contract by Scania for the first series products.
