Solar cooling of a?model stadium? for Qatar?s FIFA World Cup 2022 bid
Mirroxx brings into service 750kW of Fresnel process heat collectors in Qatar
(PresseBox) - Freiburg, Germany / Doha, Qatar September 20, 2010 - Mirroxx, a leading provider of Fresnel process heat collectors, has commissioned its largest collector field so far with a 1400 m² aperture area in Doha (Qatar). The heat generated by the collector field is used to power an absorption chiller, which provides air-conditioning for a 500-seat showcase football stadium constructed by ES-Group/London and designed by Arup Associates.
Qatar has hosted the Asian Games, is due to host the Asian Cup in 2011 and has submitted a bid to host the FIFA World Cup 2022. The six-member FIFA inspection team had first-hand experience of the solar-cooled air in this ?model stadium? on Tuesday September 14.
Arup Associates? Practice Principal and Arup Sustainability Leader, Michael Beaven explained how the system works: ?The ideas used in the model stadium are intended to show how energy can be considered as an integrated aspect of architecture, engineering and infrastructure with renewable energy contributing for the first time at scale in Qatar.?
The Mirroxx Fresnel collector can provide temperatures up to 400°C and is designed for a thermal power range from several hundred kW to 10 MW. It is small enough to be installed on flat rooftops of large buildings, but big enough to meet the thermal power demand of industrial solar cooling systems. It fills the gap between small solar thermal collectors for domestic applications and the large concentrating collectors for solar thermal electricity generation.
Over the past five years, the Mirroxx team has successfully installed Fresnel collectors for solar cooling systems in Southern Europe, Northern Africa and the Middle East. This installation was so far the largest and most time sensitive, with the planned FIFA inspection visit a fixed time-goal for the start of operation.
?This collector field with a primary mirror area of 1400 m² is a giant leap ahead for our company and our technology. This installation shows not only the capabilities of our technology, but also the capabilities of our team. After receiving the order at the end of April we were able to complete the installation by mid-September, which is definitely outstanding. We hope that this project will be a great reference for our potential new customers worldwide.? says Christian Zahler, Managing Director of Mirroxx.
