For tough tasks in automotive: Honsel develops corrosionresistant extruded aluminium profiles

ID: 1018935

(PresseBox) - Honsel has developed a new generation of extruded aluminium profiles featuring extreme corrosionresistance. These profiles are also very strong, so they are ideal especially for loadbearing automotive chassis and body structures. Thanks to their lower weight when compared with steel, these light metal components reduce a vehicle's consumption and thus its CO2 emissions. In addition, the new aluminium profiles require no elaborate surface treatment, which saves additional cost.
Aluminium is generally regarded as corrosionresistant. This is due to the oxide layer that forms on the aluminium surface in a normal environment and prevents any further corrosion attacks. This natural corrosion resistance, however, cannot withstand very aggressive media. In automotive applications, for example, moist and saltladen air can make aluminium components more prone to corrosion. One particular challenge for the component strength thereby is socalled intercrystalline corrosion between the crystals of the material compound: The corrosion spreads along the grain boundaries deep into the component, thus reducing the loadbearing crosssection. As aluminium profiles for automotive applications are always dimensioned to save weight and thus have thinner walls, a critical crack depth - at which the component might fail - is also reached sooner.
To prevent that, aluminium profiles up to now have had to be surfacetreated. That meant substantial expenditure in financial and time terms. Apart from that, the protective coating can be damaged in vehicle operation, hence becoming ineffective. The new generation of aluminium extruded profiles from Honsel meets all the requirements of the automotive manufacturers with regard to corrosionresistance without the profile needing further treatment. In addition, they are still very strong, while ductile at the same time, a basic requirement for use in vehicles. Honsel prevents intercrystalline corrosion by deploying new material alloys with improved properties, for example through a material compound that is largely free of coarse grains and homogenous. Other alloy elements have the effect that harmful material precipitations can no longer settle directly onto the grain boundaries and react there. In addition, Honsel has adjusted the temperature profile of the material during the entire production process specifically to the changed requirements of the new alloys.

Developed specifically for automotive applications, Honsel has been producing especially strong and nonetheless highly deformable extruded profiles in mass production since 1994. Decisive to the market success of these profiles is their high potential to make vehicles lighter and thus more economical: with structural components in light metal instead of steel, up to 40 percent of component weight can be saved with comparable strength and crash safety. Based on that knowhow, Honsel developed the corrosionresistant aluminium extruded profiles within two years and put them into series production.

Honsel is one of the world's leading producers of lightmetal components with primary focus on the automotive industry. The company develops and manufactures aluminium and magnesium products using the casting, extruding and rolling processes for engine, transmission, suspension and body in white of passenger cars and commercial vehicles. Additionally, the company supplies products for engineering and other applications. Components and solutions from Honsel reduce vehicle weights, fuel consumption and emissions, thus contributing to environmental protection. Founded in 1908, Honsel has become a development partner and systems supplier for the worldwide automotive industry and has facilities in Germany, France, Spain, Brazil and Mexico. About 3.800 employees achieved a total turnover of about 540 million Euros.
