- Patent application filed for innovative technology to obtain biogenic
fuel - BDI extends position as technology leader
- Millions in government funding
- Further contribution to achievement of the EU climate targets
(Graz, 25. May 2010) BDI - BioDiesel International AG, manufacturer of
special plants and leading supplier of biodiesel production plants, has
developed an innovative new process for obtaining biogenic fuel and has
filed a patent application for it. Instead adding biodiesel to the fuel -
the standard practice up to now - the fuel will already be provided with up
to about 20 per cent biogenic content in the refining process in future
with the help of by-products of the mineral oil industry. This creates a
completely new basis for more effective utilisation of refineries and more
economic use of a valuable raw material - crude oil - all over the world.
What is known as the BioCrack technology from BDI processes a by-product of
the mineral oil industry and solid biomass to obtain high-quality fuel with
up to 20 per cent biogenic content. Within the next three years, the
innovative new process will be implemented at the pilot level in a
scaling-up exercise aimed at bringing the process to market in partnership
with an international mineral oil company. In doing this, BDI is extending
its position as technology leader for the processing of difficult oils and
fats into biodiesel that meets the official standards to include the
processing of non-biogenic by-products of the mineral oil industry.
The BioCrack technology from BDI enables new materials to be processed from
by-products of mineral oil refining - such as vacuum gas oil - while also
making use at the same time of the infrastructure that is already available
in the mineral oil industry. The fuel product is given up to 20 per cent
biogenic content by what is known as the integrated co-processing of
by-product and biomass. Renewable raw materials like wood or straw are
mainly used here. The technology developed by BDI will enable the mineral
oil industry all over the world to increase sustainability, minimise
resource input and improve environmental performance in the established
production operations with the help of biogenic fuel components. BDI is
implementing its philosophy here, which is that the worldwide energy
problem cannot be solved by solar, wind, hydrogen technologies or any other
individual renewable energy source; this is only possible by using all the
different options from the various areas.
Global demand for biofuels that do not represent competition for food is
growing all the time. BDI has succeeded in combining two important aspects
in a single solution with the BioCrack technology: minimisation of the use
of finite mineral oil resources, on the one hand, and a significant
increase in the added value of a low-quality by-product of diesel
production, on the other hand. BDI has been granted millions in funding
from the Austrian 'Climate and Energy Programme' for the development of the
BioCrack technologyas part of the research and technology campaign 'New
Energies 2020'. This is confirmation not only of the confidence in the
ability of BDI to bring the new process to market but also of the approach
that the company has adopted ever since it was established with its
innovative technologies for manufacturing high-quality biofuels.
'As a pioneer in the 'Waste to BioFuels' field, it has always been our goal
to develop technologies that enable biofuel to be obtained from inexpensive
residual and waste materials. In our search for new raw materials, we have
now found a suitable candidate in the petrochemical industry too: with a
by-product of the refining process and biomass, we are able to produce a
high-quality fuel with a biogenic content of up to 20%. This technology is
another way to make it possible for the EU's climate targets for 2020 to be
reached', says Wilhelm Hammer, CEO of BDI - BioDiesel International AG. The
idea of processing waste materials (used cooking oils) into biodiesel was
put into practice for the first time as long ago as 1994. 26 of 30 plants
sold so far are based on the multi-feedstock process that the company
developed and patented itself.
About BDI - BioDiesel International AG
BDI - BioDiesel International AG is market and technology leader in the
construction of customised BioDiesel plants using the multi-feedstock
process the company has developed itself, which can manufacture BioDiesel
from different raw materials, such as vegetable oils, used cooking oils and
animal fats.
The company has specialised in the development of technologies that make
optimum use of resources in the industrial processing of by- and waste
products ever since it was established in 1996 and owns an extensive patent
portfolio that has resulted from its in-house research and development
activities. As a leading manufacturer of special plants, BDI - BioDiesel
International AG also supplies efficient plant concepts in the 'Waste to
BioFuels' field that are designed to obtain high-quality omega-3 fatty
acids and to produce BioGas from industrial waste. The range of services
includes public authority, basic and detailed engineering, installation and
start-up as well as after-sales support.
BDI - BioDiesel International AG and the companies it consolidates
currently have more than 130 employees. The shares in BDI - BioDiesel
International AG (ISIN AT0000A02177) are listed in the Prime
Standard/Regulated Market at Frankfurt Stock Exchange.
