Hamburg, 5 May 2010 - Next year, Hamburg will hold the title "European Green
Capital 2011". With its strong commitment to sustainability, Hamburg is among
the world's leading cities as regards environment and climate protection. At
this year's 821st HAFENGEBURTSTAG HAMBURG, taking place from 7 to 9 May, Hamburg
will give a taste of things to come: the highlights of the port festival will be
the solar-powered catamaran Tûranor PlanetSolar and the exhibition PlanetSolar
Village.
The solar catamaran Tûranor PlanetSolar is an unparalleled project. Looking as
if it had been built for a science fiction film, it is not alone the design that
makes the catamaran so unique: with a length of 31 metres, the Tûranor
PlanetSolar is the world's largest solar-powered boat. Calling at the port of
Hamburg will be the boat's maiden voyage. With this hightec catamaran, the
engineers have aimed high: the Tûranor PlanetSolar can be regarded as the
cutting edge for sustainable energy engineering on the water. The plan for the
boat is to circumnavigate the globe in 2011, powered by solar energy alone.
At the accompanying exhibition, PlanetSolar Village, visitors can learn more
about Hamburg's title "Green European Capital 2010" and make suggestions about
protecting Hamburg's environment. In an open dialogue, topics such as solar
technology, energy savings and renewable energy will be covered. Only a brief
walk away from the catamaran's moorage, the HafenCity's Traditional Ship Harbour
offers a lively insight into energy generation based on solar power.
The date on which the HAFENGEBURTSTAG HAMBURG is celebrated goes back to the
Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, who, on the 7th of May 1189, granted the tradesmen
of Hamburg a charter, providing an exemption from customs duty between Hamburg
and the North Sea. This day is generally regarded as the birth of the port of
Hamburg.
During the world's largest port festival, 300 seafaring vessels, among them five
cruise liners, as well as 200 additional programme items will provide excellent
entertainment to more than 1 million visitors from around the world. The
HAFENGEBURTSTAG HAMBURG will take place against the impressive backdrop of the
port in operation.
