- Positive annual earnings in spite of the difficult environment
- High equity ratio of about 70%
- Strategic realignment with 'waste to energy' solutions
(Graz, 31. March 2010) The Austrian company BDI - BioDiesel International
AG experienced a fiscal year dominated by difficult general conditions: as
expected, sales and earnings in 2009 were lower than in the previous year.
BDI nevertheless succeeded in producing a positive result in 2009. The
company also supplemented its skills in special plant manufacturing by
adding new technologies in the BioGas field and in the obtainment of
omega-3 fatty acids and biogenic fuel as well as by optimising existing
plants even when they were originally bought from other suppliers. In
January 2010, BDI established a joint venture with a local plant
manufacturer in Brazil, one of the fastest-growing markets for the
construction of BioDiesel plants.
'We used 2009 to broaden our strategic base and to expand our product
portfolio. BDI is starting the new fiscal year well equipped, with an
extended product range and innovative new technologies', says Wilhelm
Hammer, CEO of BDI - BioDiesel International AG. 'In recent months, we have
been registering an increase in demand for expansions in the capacity of
existing plants too. A great deal of interest is being shown in our new
developments as well. This makes us optimistic about the future!'
Positive annual earnings in spite of the difficult environment
The sales generated by BDI were 45 per cent lower than in the previous year
due to a low level of orders on hand at the beginning of the year and
delays in order intake relating to major projects. Sales in 2009 were EUR
33.9 million compared with EUR 61.7 million in 2008. The after-sales
business and small optimisation projects involving the retrofitting and
upgrading of BioDiesel plants developed encouragingly. The reduction in
sales meant that earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) were lower than in
the previous year too. EBIT remained positive at EUR 1.8 million (previous
year: EUR 5.0 million), however, thanks to efficiency improvements and
successfully implemented measures taken to reduce fixed costs. The profit
for the year amounted to EUR 2.5 million after EUR 4.6 million in the
previous year. The earnings per share therefore reached EUR 0.67 (previous
year: EUR 1.22).
BDI's equity remained at the high level of EUR 68.1 million at the end of
the year. The equity ratio increased from 63.3 per cent to 70.0 per cent.
BDI's strong financial position is a crucial factor in making sure that new
challenges can be tackled and strategic progress can be made successfully.
Order intake creates a sound basis for 2010
In mid-2009, BDI was commissioned to construct a BioDiesel plant with an
annual capacity of 100,000 tonnes. This project with an order volume of
about EUR 31 million is part of an innovative energy farm in the port of
Amsterdam. The company also obtained various commissions for projects to
expand and optimise existing BDI plants in Lithuania, Norway, Germany,
Austria and Hong Kong. These orders create a sound basis for utilising the
capacities in 2010. Total orders on hand amounted to EUR 39.3 million at
the end of 2009 (previous year: EUR 25.3 million).
Expansion of the product and service portfolio
In addition to BioDiesel plants with the proven multi-feedstock technology,
BDI will be supplying biogas plants in future: the 'Enbaferm' BioGas
technology developed by the company's corporate partner Enbasys does not
depend on biomass from agricultural sources; it processes industrial and
municipal residual and waste materials instead. This raw material
flexibility in the waste to energy concept has already proved to be
successful in BDI biodiesel plants and enables the company to take
advantage of an existing customer base to some extent.
With its new 'RetroFit' programme, BDI intends to optimise BioDiesel plants
manufactured by other suppliers in future as well, obtaining references for
the BDI technology in new markets too as a result.
BDI has also co-operated with its German subsidiary UIC to develop a plant
concept for the obtainment of omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil. These
extremely high-quality fatty acids play an important role in the food and
pharmaceutical industries in particular. Optimum use is made of the raw
material thanks to the new plant concept combined with BDI's biofuel
production skills. A valuable biofuel is manufactured from the by-product
of the obtainment of omega-3 fatty acids with the help of a special
technology.
'RepCat' is a technology that has been developed specially for difficult
but also inexpensive waste or by-products from the oil and fat industry.
This very special and innovative BioDiesel production process has already
proved to be successful on an industrial scale too: for more than two years
now, 'RepCat' has been in operation at the BioDiesel plant in Arnoldstein,
Austria, and is producing top-quality BioDiesel. The expectations on the
new process have been fulfilled in every respect in daily industrial
production operations, so that 'RepCat' is now being marketed all over the
world.
BDI works constantly on the optimisation of existing processes, but also
focusses very intensively on new developments.
The 'BioCrack' technology patented by BDI, for example, uses a by-product
from the mineral oil industry as well as biomass to obtain high-quality
fuel with up to 20% biogenic content. 'BioCrack' is to be implemented all
over the world on an industrial scale in co-operation with the
international mineral oil industry in three years.
Concentration on new products and new markets in 2010
As part of its strategic realignment exercise, BDI will be concentrating
primarily on introducing its new products and entering new markets in 2010.
The company has strengthened its sales team with the aim of intensifying
coverage of future markets like Eastern Europe, the CIS states, North and
South America and Asia. In Brazil, one of the most important BioDiesel
markets in the world, the joint venture established with a local partner in
January 2010 will enable BDI to act as a single, integrated supplier that
covers the entire added value chain with an operating base in the country.
At the current time, positive annual earnings are guaranteed in 2010 with
the existing orders on hand. In the medium term, the company expects to
reach the sales level of previous years again and still aims to reach an
EBIT margin of up to 10 per cent.
