Saint-Gobain Oberland AG presents its 2009 Annual Report
Bad Wurzach, 26th March 2010 - The economic and financial crisis in 2009
meant that Saint-Gobain Oberland AG was unable to achieve its sales and
turnover targets in full. Nevertheless, the container glass manufacturer
registered a generally positive business trend. The group turnover declined
by 6.0 percent from 556.5 mill. EUR in 2008, to 523.1 mill. EUR in the year
under report. The group result after tax was 44.9 mill. EUR compared with
52.5 mill. EUR the previous year. This is revealed in the Annual Report.
The company's complete Annual Report is due for publication on 26th March
2010.
The generally weak economic situation did not have a drastic effect on the
consumption of glass packaging during the year under report. Some product
segments, however, did come under pressure. This affected Saint-Gobain
Oberland, in particular, in the areas of beer and wine. Beer sales suffered
in the first quarter in the area of exports due to the slump in the target
markets, and in the second quarter of the year due to the effects of the
poor weather in Germany. For reusable glass, investment stops by the
breweries made themselves felt. In the wine segment the decline in sales
resulted, above all, from the preceding accumulation of excess capacities.
The area of glasses continued to be stable.
The container glass plants of Saint-Gobain Oberland in Russia and in the
Ukraine were also affected by the international economic crisis. Here,
foreign-currency problems also had an effect. In Russia, total turnover
nevertheless increased from 81.8 mill. EUR to 86.3 mill. EUR (+ 5.6
percent). The reason for this was largely the integration of the Kamyshin
plant for the full year of 2009. In the Ukraine, the sales volume declined
by 30.5 percent to 37.1 mill. EUR.
One positive effect last year was that the prices for energy and raw
materials relaxed. The market for broken glass - the main raw material of
the container glass industry - also settled down a little. In some cases,
however, recycling glass is still relatively scarce.
Continuous plant optimization, in particular in connection with major
furnace repairs, enabled Saint-Gobain Oberland to regularly make its
production more efficient and to make energy savings. Together with a
consistent approach to quality, the company also feels well-equipped to
continue to satisfy the high standards of product quality demanded by the
customers in future.
The annual profit of the AG declined slightly from 26.2 mill. EUR to 24.3
mill. EUR. Of this total, it is intended to distribute 24.00 EUR per share
as the dividend. This will be proposed by the Supervisory Board and
Executive Board at the Annual General Meeting in Bad Wurzach-Ziegelbach on
18th May 2010.
