bmp AG: bmp wins mandate for a EUR 20 million early phase fund in
Brandenburg
Berlin, 03/25/2010
bmp AG (ISIN DE0003304200) has won the mandate to manage a EUR 20 million
early phase fund in Brandenburg. bmp will thus significantly increase its
assets under management in the area of venture capital direct investments,
and is taking a further step towards its strategic aim of managing
primarily third-party funds as a fund manager.
bmp also succeeded in recruiting Lars Michalak, who previously worked for
many years as an investment manager at IBB Beteiligungsgesellschaft in
Berlin, as a partner in its management of the fund. He will head the
Potsdam office.
In a joint press release from the Ministry for Economic and European
Affairs (MWE), InvestitionsBank des Landes Brandenburg and bmp, the
collaboration was publicised today as follows:
+++ New fund strengthens young Brandenburg companies
- EUR 20 million risk capital fund for young, innovative and small
companies -
A new fund is being established in Brandenburg for young, innovative, small
companies. Its objective is to strengthen the equity base of these
companies in the early phase through open-ended equity investments in
conjunction with subordinated loans. The fund volume is EUR 20 million.
Investments in corporations are planned of up to EUR 1 million in total per
company based in or with facilities in Brandenburg. The involvement of
private investors such as business angels is possible and desirable.
The Ministry of Economics commissioned InvestitionsBank des Landes
Brandenburg (ILB) to develop this fund. The ILB thus established BFB
Frühphasensfonds Brandenburg GmbH (Frühphasensfonds) as a wholly-owned
subsidiary. 75% of the fund's resources will be provided by the European
Regional Development Fund (ERDF), and 25% from budget funds of the State of
Brandenburg.
Management of the investment company has been assumed by the listed company
bmp AG, which won a public Europe-wide tender. bmp AG has more than 12
years' experience in early phase financing and will use this to support
young companies. bmp AG's fund management team has officially assumed its
activities and opened an office in InvestitionsBank des Landes Brandenburg,
which will be headed by Lars Michalak.
Ralf Christoffers, the Brandenburg State Minister for Economic and European
Affairs, commented on today's signing of the contract: 'The new risk
capital fund will offer additional equity to young, innovative and small
companies in Brandenburg. This will enable young corporate structures to be
developed and strengthened. At the same time, this will reinforce
Brandenburg as an innovation location - and innovation strength is a
competitive advantage. Most encouraging is that the fund profits will be
available to promote small and medium companies in Brandenburg when the
investment is completed.'
Klaus-Dieter Licht, Chairman of the Management Board of InvestitionsBank
des Landes Brandenburg (ILB), commented: 'Equity weakness among many young
companies is often a barrier to successful development. The new fund
continues ILB's offering to strengthenthe equity of young Brandenburg
companies. We are confident that the new BFB Frühphasenfonds Brandenburg
and the work of its fund manager bmp will make a key contribution to the
long-term growth of innovative companies in the State of Brandenburg'.
'We are delighted by this order and the confidence it represents. We
believe that, on the basis of our twelve years of experience in early phase
financing, our strong deal flow and our regional expertise, we will be able
to build and develop a successful portfolio of promising growth companies,'
explained Oliver Borrmann, CEO of bmp AG.
