(Thomson Reuters ONE) - * World record speed * Another step to Ericsson's vision of 50 billion connected devicesAt the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Ericsson (NADAQ:ERIC) set aworld record by showcasing LTE/4G with a speed of 1 gigabit per second in thedownlink.Johan Wibergh, head of Networks and Executive Vice President, said: "We envision50 billion connected devices by 2020.Every device and every situation thatbenefits from a connection should have one. Patients will remotely connect tohospitals; students from rural areas will connect to universities anywhere inthe world; rescue workers will send live videos from disaster areas forefficient response."Johan Wibergh continued: "The use of mobile broadband is growing quickly, drivenby consumers powered with smartphones and connected laptops. With thecombination of our technology leadership and services capabilities, we areequipped to support our customers in building networks that manage the increasedusage while providing consumers with the best experience.To date, Ericsson has signed commercial LTE contracts with five major globaloperators;AT&T in the US, Verizon inthe US ,TeliaSonera in Norway and Sweden, MetroPCS inthe US andDoCoMo in Japan.This world first demonstration is utilizing Multi Carrier technology andMultiple-Input-Multiple-Output, MIMO, and runs on Ericsson commercial LTEhardware.  By combining these technologies, speeds of up to 1 gigabit per secondare possible. The demonstration uses four carriers of 20MHz each, totally 80MHzand 4x4 MIMO, data is sent over the air-interface on four independentbit-streams.LTE, the next generation of mobile communication technology, enables the fasttransfer of huge amounts of data in an efficient and cost-effective way,optimizing the use of the frequency spectrum.With increased speed and decreasedlatency, consumers can enjoy a wide range of applications (real-time web, onlinegaming, social media collaboration and video conferencing) effortlessly andwhile on the move. LTE will meet the demands of new and enhanced mobile internetapplications of the future.Ericsson has been driving open standards and has had the highest impact on thereleased LTE specifications. Ericsson expects to hold 25 percent of allessential patents for LTE, making it the largest patent holder in the industry.The demonstration will be carried out at Ericsson's exhibition area in Hall 6,La Fira, Barcelona during the GSMA Mobile World Congress.Access is by invitationonly.
