TransAtlantic's icebreakers are called in for icebreaking in Baltic Sea
(Thomson Reuters ONE) - TheSwedish Maritime Administration, SMA, has drafted two of TransAtlantic'soffshore/icebreaker vessels, Tor Viking and Balder Viking, for icebreakingassignment in the Baltic Sea. The vessels will be equipped with detachabletowing notches in Landskrona and are expected to be in the Baltic Sea area bythe middle of next week.The last time one of TransAtlantic's vessels was drafted for an icebreakingassignment was winter 2007 when Tor Viking spent a month breaking ice.TransAtlantic has a long-term contract with the SMA, which entails that thevessels must be available during the first quarter of the year as required andwithin ten days for icebreaking in the Baltic Sea. In return, Transatlanticreceives an annual basic fee, regardless of whether icebreaking is conducted ornot. If icebreaking is conducted, the fee is increased. The contract expires in2015, with an option to extend for an additional 15 years.
