(Thomson Reuters ONE) - Mainstream Canada and Ahousaht First Nation signed a new protocol agreement onJan 8, 2010. The protocol guides the principles for working together andestablishing a sustainable and mutually beneficial salmon farming operation.This is in the Hahoulthee of the Hawiih, the traditional territory of theAhousaht, where business practices are conducted in an environmentally, sociallyand economically sustainable manner.-     Mainstream acknowledges that our farming area is situated in theHahoulthee of the Hawiih and that the Ahousaht have claims for constitutionallyprotected rights and title within this area, says Fernando Villarroel, ManagingDirector of Mainstream Canada.Elements of the agreement for Ahousaht include Economic Benefits, Training andEducation programs, Salmon Enhancement funding, Employment, Contracting andBusiness Opportunities.-          We are very pleased with this agreement. The agreement is based onclose and good cooperation with Ahousaht, providing opportunity for positivedevelopment both for Mainstream and for Ahousaht. The protocol providescertainty and stability for Mainstream to operate within the Ahousaht territory,says Fernando Villarroel, Managing Director for Mainstream Canada.-          Ahousaht is satisfied with a protocol agreement that provides manybenefits for the Ahousaht. Our people work in Mainstream Canada fish farm sitesbut also they watch what goes on. Having eyes and ears on the farm sites isuseful to a community that has concerns about environmental conditions in theirlands and water, and we find Fish Farming is replacing the prosperity missingsince the end of the commercial fishery, states Maquinna, Hayoopanulth andKeesta, hereditary chiefs of Ahousaht First Nation.Ahousaht is located on Flores Island, off the West Coast of Vancouver Island.Ahousaht First Nation has a population of over 1000 people in the reserve andover 2000 members, and is the largest nation on the west coast of VancouverIsland.
