Windows/Linux File Exchange: A Simple Approach
Copying files between computers can be difficult for many reasons, especially across operating systems. New freeware tool provides a simple solution.
(firmenpresse) - Whenever two computers are connected, file exchange can be difficult, due to missing shared folders, admin rights, DNS servers or other technical reasons.
The free Swiss File Knife (SFK) provides a solution through it's integrated HTTP and FTP servers. The tool requires no installation, and therefore no administration rights. It can be run directly from any Windows or Linux command line.
Running an SFK Instant HTTP server on one machine allows to connect from another machine via a web browser. All files in the current folder are made available for download. If no web browser is available, many Linux systems still have a "wget" command to download files.
The HTTP server is started by typing "sfk httpserv" on the command line.
Alternatively, running the SFK Instant FTP server ("sfk ftpserv") on one machine allows to connect from another machine by an FTP client.
This approach allows to exchange files between Windows, Linux and Apple Macintosh, between physical and virtual machines without the need for installation or configuration procedures.
