exhibition -new way of life - museum of nonconformist art St. Petersburg 23May to 21June 2009

Kurt Fleckenstein's exhibition in the Museum o Nonconformist Art in St. Petersburg depicts the theme “New Way of Life”. Based on the recognition that after the opening of the Iron Curtain, almost 20 years ago, capitalism conquered the Eastern part of the Northern Europe. Without any restrictions and changed human life profoundly, the artist deals with the effects of this boom on men and nature in a manifold way.

(businesspress24) - In the museum will be built several installations with the context to New Way of Life.

On the first view one realizes a big cube of red cloth. The material which generally is used for advertising banners on house walls in cities is tightened on a normal trade scaffolding. The cloth is transparent and on the second glance reveals the following sentence in black writing: Freedom is space for the spirit. In a corner a normal shopping trolley form a super market is hanging, the rest of the box is empty. Of course, in the centre of a museum this cube is a bit unusual, one does not expect it there at all.The nearer he comes, the better he can look into the interior of the cube. Step by step he is able to work out the meaning of the sentence, he has - so to speak search the information. This moment may be understood as a symbol for democracy, as well as the form of the box. What is really hidden in it? The text takes up the theme democracy in capitalism, is, however, counteracted by the red colour, the symbolic colour of communism. And other questions arise such as: Under which conditions does liberty exist? Isn't liberty the precondition for self-development? Isn't consumption symbolized by the shopping trolley - the drawback of democracy / of capitalism? In this way - with most simple tools from the daily life explosive subjects of the post communist time are depicted and the necessary permanent struggle for the “better” democracy is picked out as a central theme.

chess -game of the kings
On a square area of 3 metres x 3 metres you see low acrylic glass cases, alternately filled with crude oil and blood. This creates the impression of a chess game in red and black. Oil is the raw material of the 20th and 21st century and gains more and more in importance. Nowadays wars are no longer waged on land as guarantor of food acquisition, but increasingly on the black gold as it is also named. In these
days it is irreplaceable for the production of energy and electricity, as fuel and as an important basis for the typical materials of the industrial society. That is why the present military conflicts often are only a pretext for tribal or religious feuds, the real reasons are much more lying in the access to oil. The one who is able to construct pipelines, who owns territory which grants the access to the most important raw material of the world, is the king of the world of these days. It is based on human nature that further blood will flow in these wars.

This piece of art deals with this problem in an artistic-aesthetical way, without being insistently clear. The materials are genuine crude oil and genuine blood which were specially preserved for this exhibition. The contact to the floor is interrupted by the acrylic glass cases.

new way of life
This video, shot from two different perspectives and projected on two walls, shows a new car that was totally damaged in an accident and is cleaned again and again in a car wash. This work is based on the following reflections:

1. Nowadays cars have an extraordinary importance in all political systems. Either as symbol ofprogress, of independence, of mobility in general or as status symbol of first order.
2. On the other hand a car wash is the characteristic of the modern age and of the capitalism: No longer people wash their cars themselves if possible, but have them washed by a machine. Especially the car wash is a picture like 'Mac Donalds” for the “New Way of Life”.
3. Car driving promises the joy of liberty. Particularly in the post communist countries people drive outstandingly quickly. Driving quickly means liberty for its own sake.
4. As a result a higher risk of accidents has to be observed, accidents many of them heavy - are the daily reality.

This video now is completely absurd, does it try to achieve a kind of compensation of the car madness symbolizing the capitalism which has completely gotten out of hand. The rotten car has at least to be clean, shall get pure and innocent again. Just like the accident that may have cost human lives shall be made reversible and could be abolished. From the mere artistic point of view here Kurt Fleckensteins's important element of the Ready-made-Character, following Marcel Duchamp, comes to fruition.
