Smokie visits the Ice Camp before rocking the event stage
'Sun, Snow and Party' week: a true cult
In their home country Great Britain snow is a rare good. For this reason Terry, Mike, Mick, Steve, and Martin were twice as happy to be back in Zell am See-Kaprun when they arrived last Wednesday after an absence of one year. 'Last year we had an amazing time and felt that we had to leave way too early', says front man Terry Uttley.
(firmenpresse) - However, the band's schedule was brimming with appointments once again this year so that the cult band could only spare one day for the 'Sun, Snow and Party' week. Right before their live concert they set out to explore the radiant white glacier of Kitzsteinhorn.
The band's destination was the popular 'Volvo Ice Camp' at an altitude of about 2,500 metres above sea level. Equipped with everything they needed for a day on the glacier, the band members took a stroll through the magic igloo world and were really impressed with the elaborate shelters made of 60 tons of ice and 5,000 cubic metres of snow. Apparently the band's drummer Steve Pinnell was overwhelmed by this huge amount of snow around him and grabbed the opportunity to jump into the camp's own whirlpool. In warm bubbling water and absolutely stunning weather, he enjoyed the view of the local mountain of Kaprun. Martin Bullard, the band's keyboarder, would not miss the chance to cruise the slopes in one of the huge snow groomers. None of them ventured out to the pistes on skis, though. 'Playing golf in the sun' was more like their idea of perfect sporting activity, they admitted.
Unfortunately, they did not have the time for a tee-off at the local golf club but the sun accompanied the quintet the entire day. In the evening Smokie performed as the highlight of the annual 'Sun, Snow and Party' week in front of an audience of 3,000 enthusiastic fans. For two hours, they rocked the event stage at the valley station of Areitbahn with hits like 'Living Next Door to Alice'. The supporting act Paradox-Choice did a great job as well in warming up the audience. Sebastian Kaufmann, the region's podcaster, led through the evening. On the morning of the same day he had already accompanied Smokie on their way up to Kitzsteinhorn. The interview in the cable car is available as a podcast at www.zellamsee-kaprun.com.
But Smokie fans can look forward to another treat on the Internet: for the web-TV channel of Zell am See-Kaprun, the five musicians decided to accept an unusual challenge. Check out www.zellamsee-kaprun.tv some time soon to find out about the band's secret talents!
