'Hochkultur - There is music in the air' on Schmittenhöhe
In Zell am See-Kaprun, the most beautiful aspects of Austria are merged in a picturesque holiday region. Another important characteristic is the traditional and incomparable music of the Alpine region. In the summer of 2008 the holiday destination is staging a world premiere in its honour: from 8th August the motto is 'Hochkultur - There is music in the air'. This highlight can be taken literally since two contrary elements are being joined in an entirely new way of musical entertainment.
(firmenpresse) - Hochkultur, that's the quintessence of Austrian operetta. This buoyant music style reached its climax in the 19th century, before its reception was subject to changes in the course of time. Today it is generally considered as old-fashioned and long-winded. By initiating 'Hochkultur - There is music in the air' the region of Zell am See-Kaprun and the artists' agency 'MusicArtsVienna' want to do away with these prejudices. To make sure that the event will be a real success, one of the most renowned orchestras in Europe has been invited: the Johann Strauss Ensemble. In addition, the venue is a highlight as well, in the true sense of the word: the concert will take place on the summit of 2,000-metre-high Schmittenhöhe.
With Prof. Herbert Prikopa at the rostrum, the two operetta evenings are being staged on the lush green meadows of the local mountain of Zell am See on 8th and 9th August. Prikopa has made a name for himself with TV, radio, and folk opera appearances - and as singer and conductor. But during these evenings he will also be the host and tell the visitors some amusing stories from the world of the operetta. A completely new concept: operetta in words and popular melodies. The concerts start at 7 pm and the first gondolas of the trassXpress - one of the new lift facilities which were put into service last year - leave one hour before the start. If the weather doesn't cooperate, the events will take place at the Ferry Porsche Congress Center in the heart of Zell am See.
The evenings' programmes feature musical treasures like 'Der Vogelhändler' (The Bird Seller) by Carl Zeller, 'Die Lustige Witwe' (The Merry Widow) by Franz Lehár, 'Der Bettelstudent' (The Beggar Student) by Karl Millöcker and 'Die Csárdásfürstin' (The Csárdás Princess) by Kálmán Imre as well as further classics from the golden and silver ages of the operetta from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The group has accepted invitations to concerts in Poland, Germany, and Belgium as well as to the famous concert halls of Monte Carlo, Paris, and Rome. 'Having such a high-calibre ensemble here is definitely something very special. An event which promises to be absolutely unique in its kind', says Dunja Burgsteiner, who works in the marketing department of the region and is in charge of the event programme.
The Johann Strauss Ensemble will be supported by four young and extremely talented singers - all of them protégés of Prof. Herbert Prikopa. On Sunday, 10th August, he'll be sharing his extensive experience of the world of the operetta in general and of the Strauss dynasty, to which this brunch is dedicated, in particular. The doors of the Ferry Porsche Congress Center open at 11am.
