36TH INTERNATIONAL ISTANBUL MUSIC FESTIVAL

ID: 1000466

Organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts and sponsored by Borusan Holding, the 36th International İstanbul Music Festival will take place between June 6-30, 2008.

(firmenpresse) - Hosting more than 500 artists from Turkey and abroad, 3 symphony orchestras, this year’s festival will feature a total of 22 events, among them 8 chamber orchestra and 5 chamber music concerts, 3 instrumental recitals, 4 vocal recitals, and 1 Ottoman Baroque music concert. The festival venues this year include Topkapı Palace, the Süreyya Opera, the Archeological Museum, and the Bulgarian Church alongside the Hagia Eirene Museum.

ORCHESTRAL CONCERTS AT THE FESTIVAL

The festival will be inaugurated by a concert of the Vienna Chamber Philharmonic, made up of prize-winning young musicians. Young cellist Benyamin Sönmez, who was placed among the top five at the Adam International Cello Competition dedicated to M. Rostropovich, will be the soloist in the first of two concerts given by the orchestra under conductor Claudius Traunfellner. The soloist of the orchestra’s second concert will be Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero, whose improvisational talent has won her the admiration of classical music authorities.

Accomplished young cellist Johannes Moser will give his first concert in Istanbul, accompanied by the Zurich Chamber Orchestra under its conductor Muhai Tang.

Founded by Gidon Kremer in 1997 and now one of the world’s foremost chamber orchestras, the Kremerata Baltica will once again put forward an imaginative programme. Soloist of this concert will be Gidon Kremer, who will interpret Beethoven’s violin concerto alongside works by Pärt and Britten.

The Istanbul Symphony Orchestra’s open-air concert entitled ‘Jazz meets Classic[s]’ will take place in the garden of the Archaeological Museum. The concert’s soloist will be pianist and composer Leonid Chizhik.

In ‘3 Pianists, 3 Concerti’ Alexander Melnikov, Özgür Aydın, and Muhiddin Dürrüoğlu, accompanied by the Milli Reasürans Orchestra will interpret three different piano concertos: a veritable piano summit. Under the direction of Saim Akçıl the Tekfen Philharmonic Orchestra with soloist Şirin Pancaroğlu will premiere Hasan Uçarsu’s concerto for çeng and harp in a concert entitled ‘Old World, New World’.

VOCAL FEASTS AT THE FESTIVAL

Mezzosoprano Elina Garanca, rising star of the opera stage, will perform in Istanbul for the first time, accompanied by the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra under conductor Karel Chichon. Austrian mezzosoprano Angelika Kirchschlager accompanied by the Camerata Bern will interpret Schubert lieder, and contralto Sara Mingardo with the Concerto Italiano under conductor Rinaldo Alessandrini will treat music lovers to a Vivaldi feast. Renowned countertenor Andreas Scholl and the Accademia Bizantina under Ottavio Dantone with their Händel project ‘Il Duello Amoroso’ will share the stage with soprano Hélène Guilmette.

FESTIVAL ENCOUNTERS and CHAMBER MUSIC CONCERTS

In the first of a series of Festival Encounters exceptional violinist Laurent Korcia will perform at Topkapı Palace together with pianist Michael Wendeberg and multi-faceted clarinettist Michel Portal, who is equally at home in classical music and jazz. Emmanuel Pahud, one of today’s most exciting flutists, will interpret Bach’s flute sonatas together with harpsichordist Trevor Pinnock and cellist Jing Zhao. Hélène Grimaud, who will be taking the stage at the festival for the first time, Renaud Capuçon, one of the young generation’s most accomplished violinists, and Clemens Hagen, cellist of the Hagen Quartet, will come together to form an exciting trio. In a concert entitled ‘Dream Garden’ the Borusan Quartet, founded in 2007 by members of the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra, will join forces for the first time with Hüseyin Sermet, who has established himself as one of Turkey’s most prominent young pianists. The Razumovsky Ensemble will have its festival premiere in a concert with violinist and composer H. Kraggerud. The Poetica Musica ensemble will join the festival from the US to present their project ‘Rhythms of the Two Americas’, made up of works by composers from the American continent.

RECITALS

One violin and two piano recitals will take place this year within the scope of the festival. Occupying a special place in the world of classical music thanks to her technically impeccable improvisations, Gabriela Montero will perform works by Bach alongside improvisations on baroque themes. Pianist Emre Elivar will take part in the festival with his programme entitled ‘Romantic Variations’. After a long interval Frank Peter Zimmermann will appear again before the festival audience to perform a programme ranging from Bach to Webern.

OTTOMAN COURT MUSIC / BAROQUE MUSIC

This special project takes as its point of departure the manuscripts of Ali Ufki, 17th century musician and composer in the Sultan’s service at Topkapı Palace. Developed by Çimen Seymen, the project juxtaposes European baroque music and Ottoman court music of the same time with baroque and traditional folk dances.
