(businesspress24) - PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, MD -- (Marketwire) -- 03/29/13 -- According to , self-defense remains one of the most debated subjects in today's social atmosphere. As school and public shootings continue to strike fear among the public, many officials and citizens have become unsure about the best way to not only reduce these incidents, but also how to best protect victims in emergency situations. According to a recent article from USA Today, many school districts have begun to take action in order to prepare for potential violence in the future; while some have opted to analyze the mental health side, others have begun to permit administrators to carry firearms. However, the article focuses on a different approach -- that of instructing teachers and administrators in the art of self-defense.

The article reports, "As school professionals nationwide re-evaluate plans for keeping schoolchildren safe in light of recent school shootings, more teachers, administrators and some parents are turning to self-defense training, self-defense instructors and educators nationwide say." In Battle Ground, Washington, David Mason, a seventh-degree black belt martial arts instructor, is providing self-defense training to teachers for free. He states, "Teachers are the first line of defense for schoolchildren. We need to make sure that our teachers feel safe and face the realities."

While the optional self-defense training is only growing slowly in the area, Lloyd Irvin encourages all citizens -- teachers or otherwise -- to learn the basics of the practice. He believes that learning these techniques is a great middle road for school districts struggling with how to address the growing threat of violence. However, according to USA Today some feel that self-defense training is not the right answer. The article cites Marc Egan -- associate director of government relations for the National Education Association -- who believes self-defense training is too narrow of a focus, and that mental health services can offer insight into the bigger picture surrounding the issue.

Although the issue will most likely continue to be highly debated across the country, Lloyd Irvin defends the practice, as he has experienced the immense benefits that martial arts can offer. "Martial arts and self-defense training lessons are all about providing a person with the tools to protect themselves and others in aggressive situations. It is not focused on being violent -- it is instead focused on remaining safe in the face of violence. Unlike firearms, these skills belong to those who know them and cannot be tampered with or create the potential for accidental fatality. For example, at my Martial Arts Academy, we teach students that self-defense should remain a last resort and is to never be abused; with that in mind, I believe it is an effective resource to introduce into school systems," Lloyd Irvin concludes.
