Reducing the risk of postoperative surgical infections in oncology and burned patients with the use of a mobile laminar airflow that reduces the contamination level significant

(businesspress24.com) - Nosocomial infections are the most frequent complications observed in surgical oncological patients; despite considerable progress in the areas of prevention, diagnosis and therapy, postoperative infections continue to be associated with significant morbidity, sometimes with mortality and with extra expense to cover cost of antibiotics, blood derivatives, nursing, additional surgical procedures and prolonged hospitalization. Most surgical infections are acquired intraoperatively. The risk of postoperative surgical infections is mainly related to the magnitude of surgical field contamination related to the degree of bacterial contamination acquired from the skin or nasal flora of the operating team, or from contaminated material or instruments in the operating theatre. An English Study from Whyte has been estimated that almost 70% of bacteria found in the patient‘s wound s come directly or indirectly from the instruments. There is a clearly relationship between the quality of the air and the degree of sepsis encountered. In an conventional operating room you can expect about 50 to 200 CFU/m3. This number is rising the more people are in the operating room and the longer the operation last.

Chemotherapy and prevention of infection: The increasing use of intensive cytotoxic chemotherapy for patients with solid tumours enhances the risk of opportunistic infection to levels formerly seen only in patients with acute leukaemia. Infection is a major cause of death in the patient whose immune responses have been compromised (immunocompromised patient). Chemotherapy destroys cancerous cells as well as normal, healthy cells. Some of those healthy cells that are destroyed are white blood cells, which are cells needed for fighting infections. When white blood cells are low, a condition called neutropenia, the body is vulnerable to infections. Toul is equipped with a high-efficiency particulate air filter (Hepa H 14)and can be used to protect immunocompromised patients in case of the absence of clean rooms ( total protected environment (TPE) consisting of a high-efficiency-particulate-air (HEPA)-filtered laminar air flow room to prevent infections ( e.g. neutropenic patients). The unit is mobile and can be used in various rooms. No modification of existing hospital rooms is required.

Toul instrument table maintains the sterility of the instrument table even during long operations and reduces therefore the risk of an surgical site infection SSI. This instrument table provides a horizontal ultraclean laminar airflow which is directed directly over the instruments, acting as a barrier and minimizing the presence of bacteria-carrying particles at the wound
Toul can also be used for the treatment of the burn injury during the medication of „critical patients“ such as burned patients to prevent infections
